Welcome to The Neurodivergent Sock Knitter, a space where creativity, neurodiversity, and self-discovery intertwine. I'm recently diagnosed with ADHD and autism. Join me as I share my story of burnout and the therapeutic power of knitting while navigating the neurodivergent path.
Discovering Knitting Amid Burnout: In the depths of burnout from a career in healthcare, I stumbled upon the therapeutic art of knitting. Faced with the challenges of ADHD, I found solace in the rhythm and repetition of sock knitting. Not only did it serve as a creative outlet, but it became a crucial tool for regulating anxiety, allowing my brain to heal from the burnout that had left me near catatonic.
The Sock Journey: Embarking on a sock-knitting journey, I explored various techniques, designers, podcasters, and products which I will discuss in future blogs. Obsessively knitting dozens of pairs in 2023 (and a box of singles waiting for a second sock!), The socks became not just a creative expression but a tangible reflection of my journey to understanding and accepting my neurodiversity.
Knitting Through Betrayal and Burnout: The COVID-19 pandemic unraveled the routines of the workplace, exposing the institutional betrayal embedded in the healthcare system. Initially diagnosed with major depression, PTSD, and anxiety, it took time to realize that the betrayal wasn't just professional—it was rooted in a lifetime of trying to conform to a neurotypical world. Knitting, the stalwart "Vanilla Sock" became a lifeline during this turbulent period.
Unveiling Neurodiversity: The realization of being late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman explained the stress endured since childhood. Trying to fit into a neurotypical world had taken a toll. This blog is a testament to the strength found in accepting one's neurodiversity and the resilience discovered through the art of sock knitting.
Empowering the Neurodivergent Community: Beyond personal healing, The Neurodivergent Sock Knitter aims to create a supportive space for the neurodivergent community. Let's celebrate our unique perspectives, stories, and talents while exploring the therapeutic benefits of creative expression.
Join me on this empowering journey as we knit our way through neurodiversity, acceptance, and the joy of creating something beautiful from a single strand of yarn. Whether you're an avid knitter, a fellow neurodivergent individual, or someone seeking understanding, The Neurodivergent Sock Knitter welcomes you to a space of acceptance, resilience, and creativity.
